Stop Picking a Destination. Pick How You Want to Feel.
Auntie, maybe we’ve been asking the wrong question.
Instead of “Where do I want to go?” maybe the question is “How do I want this next trip to make me feel?”
Because learning how to choose your next vacation isn't always about picking a destination. Sometimes it's about figuring out what kind of experience you're craving.
We've all seen it.
Somebody posts gorgeous pictures from Greece, a video of women dancing in Cartagena, or a fabulous rooftop dinner in Dubai, and suddenly we're checking flights.
But hold on.
Are we choosing that destination because it's what we really want? Or because somebody made it look irresistible on Instagram?
There's a difference.
And when you're spending your hard-earned money and precious vacation days, that difference matters.
Maybe you don't need another country to check off your bucket list. Maybe you need a vacation that gives you something you've been missing.
So before you start looking at maps, let's talk about what you're actually craving.
1. I Want to Exhale: Relaxing Vacation Ideas for Women Over 50
Some vacations are for doing. Others are for doing absolutely nothing you don't feel like doing. Maybe you've had a busy year. Your calendar has been full, your phone hasn't stopped ringing, and the last thing you want is a vacation that requires another schedule. You want sunshine. A beautiful pool. A comfortable lounge chair. Somebody bringing you something cold while you decide whether you're going to read another chapter or take a nap. And no, you don't need six excursions to justify the trip. A Caribbean island, a peaceful coastal resort, or a beautiful waterfront hotel might be exactly what you're craving. Rest is not a wasted vacation day. Sometimes the best thing you bring home is the feeling that you finally had room to breathe.2. I Want to Feel Fabulous: Luxury Travel With a Little Glamour
Now this is a completely different vacation. You're already thinking about what you're going to wear. You want a gorgeous hotel, beautiful scenery, incredible restaurants, and at least one evening when everybody gets dressed like the occasion deserves it. Maybe it's rooftop cocktails overlooking a glittering skyline. Maybe it's a sunset dinner on the Mediterranean. Maybe it's walking through a stunning hotel lobby and thinking, Oh yes, I chose well. And let's not forget the pictures. Not the rushed selfie in front of a monument with 200 strangers behind you. We're talking about beautiful photos that make you smile every time you see them. There's nothing shallow about wanting beauty, elegance, and a little luxury in your travels. Sometimes you want the destination. Sometimes you want the whole experience to feel like an occasion.3. I Want to Be Fascinated: History, Culture, and Discovery
Some Aunties don't want to spend the whole vacation sitting by the pool. They want to know what's behind that beautiful building. Who lived there? Why was it built? What happened on those streets 500 years ago? They want ancient temples, grand mosques, historic churches, fascinating museums, colorful markets, and stories that make history come alive. Maybe that leads you to Egypt, Japan, Istanbul, or another destination where centuries of history are part of everyday life. You might spend the morning exploring a historic site, the afternoon discovering local traditions, and dinner discussing everything you learned. And when you get home? You've got stories that go well beyond what you ate at the hotel. Some trips entertain you. Others change how you see the world. And occasionally, you get both.4. I Want to Feel Connected: Cultural Travel for Black Women
There's something powerful about visiting a place and recognizing a piece of your own story. Maybe it's walking through a historic Black neighborhood, learning about the African diaspora, hearing music that feels familiar even though you're thousands of miles from home, or meeting local people whose experiences deepen your understanding of the world. That connection might happen in Ghana, Brazil, Portugal, Harlem, or somewhere you never expected. It might come through a conversation with a local guide, a visit to a heritage site, a cooking experience, or an evening filled with music. For many Black women, culturally meaningful travel offers something beautiful scenery alone cannot. A sense of recognition. A deeper understanding of our shared history. And sometimes, a new appreciation for the connections between cultures across oceans and generations. The most memorable souvenir may be a story you didn't know you needed to hear.5. I Want to Surprise Myself: Discover Somewhere Unexpected
Let's talk about the destinations you've been overlooking. The places that never made your bucket list because you didn't know enough about them, didn't see yourself going there, or simply had your heart set on somewhere else. What if one of those places turns out to be your favorite trip? Maybe you discover the beauty of Budapest, the energy of Mexico City, the traditions of Thailand, or a culturally rich American city you've visited before but never truly explored. You taste something wonderful. You meet interesting people. You experience something you didn't even know existed. And suddenly you're saying, "Why didn't anybody tell me about this place?" Sometimes the best travel memories come from being willing to reconsider what you thought you wanted. Your bucket list is allowed to change. So are you.6. I Want to Have FUN: Food, Music, Laughter, and Sisterhood
And sometimes, Auntie, you just want a GOOD TIME. Not another lecture about the history of a building. Not another 6 a.m. wake-up call. You want good food, live music, shopping, a fabulous show, some dancing, and women around you who know how to enjoy themselves. Maybe that's a weekend in Chicago, a Broadway getaway in New York, or a lively international city with wonderful restaurants and nightlife. You want to laugh until your stomach hurts. You want to come home with inside jokes, hilarious pictures, and at least one story that begins, "Girl, let me tell you what happened..." Because travel doesn't always have to be educational, transformational, or deeply meaningful. Sometimes having the time of your life is reason enough. How to Choose Your Next Vacation Based on How You Want to Feel
Before falling in love with another destination photo, ask yourself four questions:- What do I want more of right now? Rest, excitement, culture, beauty, connection, or adventure?
- What do I want to be talking about when I get home? The incredible hotel? The people I met? The history I discovered? The fun we had?
- Do I want something familiar and comfortable, or am I ready for an experience that stretches me a little?
- What kind of trip would make me look at my calendar and genuinely count down the days?
